WFUMB 2009 e-News #5

Perspective

Following the RSNA meeting in Chicago (see Newsletter 3), I attended the 50-year celebration of the Chinese Society for Ultrasound in Medicine and Engineers, (CSUME) in Beijing.

When you are in China numbers certainly take on a different meaning.  I learnt that there are more than 16,000 ultrasound doctors in China, many of whom attended the conference and the two biggest hospitals in Beijing do more than 1,000 scans a day, (each sonography doctor scans about 50 patients in 4 hours due to the demand and numbers requiring ultrasound). In Australia, a sonographer may scan about 15 patients a day.

It was important and beneficial to represent ASUM in Beijing, not the least reason being the promotion of WFUMB 2009. There were more than 30 branches of CSUME represented at the Conference and there was much interest amongst the committees about WFUMB 2009. We hope to see a substantial delegation from China in Sydney later this year, which will mean the biggest delegation of medical doctors ever to attend a congress in Australia.
