PCCS2009 e-News #6

The theme for this year’s meeting is “Beyond the Barrier” and reflects the enormous advances that have occurred over recent years and which reach far ‘beyond the barriers’ of what we believed possible just a few years ago. This will be apparent from the wide ranging program which will cover subjects that are of interest to a numerous disciplines including pediatric cardiology, pediatric anaesthesia, pediatric intensive care and pediatric cardiac surgery. The age range of affected patients ranges from the fetus, for which detailed diagnosis is now feasible, through infancy, childhood and adolescence and into advanced adult life. Many adult cardiologists and surgeons who have an interest in adult congenital heart disease will also be present.

The quite extraordinary advances in basic science and genetics, along with dramatic changes in medical and surgical management, which is now much more solidly evidence based than was the case a decade ago, will be highlights of this meeting. These advances have lead to a huge improvement in outcomes for children in the developed world. The meeting will also focus on the challenges faced by developing countries with limited resources as well as the psychosocial and ethical issues that arise both in such environments and in the advanced centres in the West.

Other sub-text themes to be discussed include leadership, sentinel events, human factors and team-based approaches to minimizing error.
