chairmans report

The 7th International Orthodontic Congress has been organised to showcase the latest developments to contemporary orthodontics.

Attending the 7th IOC is open to all orthodontists, dental specialists, and staff. It will be of particular interest to all practitioners who seek balanced, broad based and up to date information in the science and application of clinical orthodontics.

Nearly 40 Keynote and over 70 Invited speakers will be presenting with the Principal lecturer being Professor Bill Proffit, from the University of North Carolina. Professor Proffit has a truly international reputation and he will be presenting on “New Approaches and New Technologies in Modern Orthodontics”.

This Congress is vital to our profession because of recent developments in the understanding of basic sciences behind orthodontics and dentofacial orthopaedics as well as the clinical application of this science base.

The advancement of clinical orthodontics has occurred in both of the two broad areas of diagnostic methods and the delivery of treatment mechanics, to provide better treatment outcomes more efficiently and with reduced unfavourable consequences.

There will be numerous presentations on the basic sciences that enhance our understanding and better develop our orthodontic knowledge base.  Other presentations on advancements in diagnostic methods will include the latest information of contemporary diagnostic aids such as the use of 3D photographic imagery and Cone Beam Computer Tomography (CBCT) to enable 3D reconstruction of the head and neck using lower dose radiation than conventional CAT scan systems.

The scientific committee has secured a number of world leaders in the fields of 3D imagery and state of the art diagnostic techniques. These include Dr David Sarver, who will present on a variety of topics including three dimensional analyses of patients and the importance of technologically facilitated communication for goal setting, quantification of treatment plans, and better patient understanding of what today's orthodontist is capable of.  Dr Sarver is a graduate of University of North Carolina and has authored or co authored numerous articles and book chapters, as well as his book, "Esthetics in Orthodontics and Orthognathic Surgery". He is also co-author of the 4th edition of Proffit's classic textbook "Contemporary Orthodontics".

Professor Anne-Marie Kuipers-Jagtmann, whose lecture will focus on the clinical values of modern diagnostics for daily orthodontic practice and the diagnostic possibilities that may arise from these new biological insights.  Since 1995 Professor Kuijpers-Jagtman has been Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Orthodontics and Oral Biology at the Radboud University, Nijmegen in the Netherlands.

Dr James Mah who, in his lecture titled “The Value of Cone-Beam CT Imaging in Orthodontics” will review concepts of diagnostic imaging, current literature on diagnostic ability of cone-beam CT imaging compared to traditional radiographs and show case reports will be shown to illustrate clinical situations that could not be resolved without 3-dimensional imaging.  Dr. Mah is an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Southern California where he is Director of Redmond Imaging Center and Director of the Craniofacial Virtual Reality Laboratory. His research is focused on creating virtual 3-dimensional craniofacial patients upon which diagnosis; treatment planning and simulations are performed.

These lectures provide just a small portion of the extensive high quality scientific presentations that will form the backbone of this not to be missed International Orthodontic Event.
