Since the inception of self-ligation, there has been an ongoing debate about the advantages of both active and passive self ligation. Many of the claims that are being made are not supported by adequate research. This lecture will dispel the current myths and thoroughly analyze each system using both published data and actual cases. Relevant topics to be discussed will include: friction, torque, rotation control, and mechanics. The aim of this lecture is to help the orthodontist decide which system can consistently provide optimum functional and aesthetic treatment outcomes.
